Change within Organizations Essay -- Business Environment, Organizatio
Word Count 3000 Why are there different perspectives on change within organisations INTRODUCTION Organizational Change In an ever-changing business environment, for organisations to remain competitive in this fast-moving world of technological development and globalization, organisations must examine frameworks regularly and manage change and their working practices and systems if they are to remain competitive. ââ¬Å"It is becoming increasingly important for organizations to gain competitive advantage by being able to manage and survive change â⬠ââ¬Å"Organizational change has become synonymous with managerial effectiveness since the 1980s (Burnes, 1996; Wilson, 1992). A definition given by Mark Hughes (2006 ) in his book Change Management defines ââ¬Ë Changeââ¬â¢ as ââ¬Å"The leadership and direction of the process of organizational transformation ââ¬â especially with regard to human aspects and overcoming resistance to changeâ⬠(Hughes, 2006). Change is a constant feature of organizational life and the ability to manage it is seen as a core competence of successful organizations (Bumes, 2004b). The ability of organizations to manage and survive change is becoming increasingly important in an environment where competition and globalization of markets are ever intensifying (Cao and McHugh, 2005: 475). Organizational change involves, by definition, a transformation of an organisation between two points in timeâ⬠. It is crucial for organizations to ââ¬Å"Accept that undertaking change is a natural part of business life in order to keep in line with the need for improvements or customer or fashion demandsâ⬠. The IBM report (2008 ) on Making Change Work states the ``effects of globalization , technology advances, complex multinational organizations , enable... ...e-fits-all approaches. For example, they attempt to combat resistance to change by involving employees in the initiativeââ¬â¢s design even when employees donââ¬â¢t have the information needed to provide useful inputâ⬠We need to beware of pat formulas or off-the-shelf improvement packages. Improvement tools, techniques, and approaches must be customized to fit our unique personal, team, and organizational circumstances. That's why trendy programs like quality circles, excellence, customer service, quality improvement, teams, empowerment, re-engineering and the like have failed or fallen short in so many organizations. They're often sold as a one-size-fits-all, step-by-step process that we can drop right into our organization. When that doesn't work, some managers or consultants try to alter the organization to fit the program rather than the other way around. Larkin and Abse write about the society Essay
ââ¬ËLarkin often seems to criticise societyââ¬â¢. In the light of this statement, what connections have you found between the ways in which Larkin and Abse write about the society in which they live? In your response include at least two of Larkinââ¬â¢s poems. Larkin criticises society in many of his poems and also does it from a superior place in an attempt to distance him from the society which he criticises and this can be seen in Nothing To Be Said. On the other hand, Abse writes about society and community whilst he participates in it and is a part of it. Larkin tries to stunt and remove the parts of society he criticises whilst it is clear Abse attempts to preserve many of the positives in society, for example in The Story of Lazarus, a story that surrounds the optimistic tale of someone surviving something so horrific. Abse is also very proud of the society from which he grew for example he is proud of being Welsh. Larkin labels and stereotypes the working class with a superior view in Nothing To Be Said, for example in the first stanza he describes the working class as ââ¬Ësmall-statured cross-faced tribesââ¬â¢, giving the impression that he views the working class as poorly developed, and a sense of savagery and it is possible to assume that Larkin viewed them as not very intelligent also. In addition to this, the use of the word ââ¬Ëtribesââ¬â¢ is particularly powerful and evokes this idea of animals and removes their traits as a human being. Larkinââ¬â¢s use of ââ¬Ëslow dyingââ¬â¢ also helps to emphasise his views that these people arenââ¬â¢t contributing to society, just slowly dying as they trudge on in their day to day lives, however it could also be Larkinââ¬â¢s view that for him these type of people arenââ¬â¢t going fast enough either. It may be true of Larkinââ¬â¢s opinion that the only thing he shares in common with these people is death and it is possible that Larkin resents this and doesnââ¬â¢t believe he should share anything at all with them. Larkin uses enjambment in the first verse to emphasise the steady rhythm at which everybody cruises towards death. In comparison, Abse likes to preserve people in time and focuses on the positives in society. Not only does Abse focus on positives but he presents them in a more favourable way unlike Larkin, in addition to this Abse takes people from history and gives them life again in his poetry for example ââ¬ËThe Story of Lazarusââ¬â¢. This poem aims to continue the legacy of Lazarus, a survivor of the holocaust, ââ¬Ëhe showed us the number on his armââ¬â¢. Abseââ¬â¢s views on society here suggest that he is upset that people are becoming less interested in preserving the tale, ââ¬Ësoon they merely noddedââ¬â¢. In comparison, Larkin doesnââ¬â¢t want to preserve the tale of the people he mentions in ââ¬ËNothing To Be Saidââ¬â¢, itââ¬â¢s as though the repetition of ââ¬ËSlow dyingââ¬â¢ is emphasising that for Larkin, it wasnââ¬â¢t slow enough. Abse also hints at the biblical tale of Lazarus, suggesting that this tale should be savoured and of its significance. On the other hand, in ââ¬ËNothing To Be Saidââ¬â¢, the title and final line diminishes any significance of the society and can be interpreted that there is nothing more to say on the subject. In the ââ¬ËWhitsun Weddingsââ¬â¢, an observational poem, Larkin takes superior views upon the wedding party, as he does in ââ¬ËNothing To Be Saidââ¬â¢, and he makes bold and unkind judgments such as ââ¬Ëmotherââ¬â¢s loud and fatââ¬â¢. Unlike Abse, Larkin distances himself from society, for example in Whitsun Weddings, ââ¬ËI leant More promptly out next timeââ¬â¢ ââ¬â he tries to be involved in society but never feels like he fits, and the train in the poem separates Larkin from community. In the Whitsun Weddings Larkin shows a slightly more sympathetic side as he discusses the train journey from Hull to London and how much it has changed and perhaps shows a sentimental side regarding how time has changed the things he knew. In addition to this, the train journey could be a metaphor for Larkinââ¬â¢s inability to adapt to ever changing society and the fast pace that it moves. To conclude, Abse celebrates people within society and relishes the opportunity to be a part of it, where as Larkin tries distinctly hard to distance him from the ever modernising world, in attempt to disguise his insecurities and promote his sense of superiority. This superiority removes any doubt in Larkinââ¬â¢s mind that he could be wrong and therefore missed out on so many things in life. Abse on the other hand is proud of the society from which he came, especially emphasises his Welsh nationality and in addition to this his Jewish faith. To conclude, Larkinââ¬â¢s poems reflect on all that is missing in society, while Abse is in the middle of it and making the most of everything positive society has to offer.

Crime and Victimization Essay
In our scenario, Dr. Oââ¬â¢Donnell touched on the psychodynamic theory of crime. This theory suggests that a person commits a crime because of an unbalanced or antisocial personality. These offenders may have also been bulled or abused as children which may have led to their instability. An example of this theory is the case of Adam Lanza. On December 14, 2012, Mr. Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Ct and opened fire on the school. He shot and killed twenty children and six adults before turning the gun on himself. According to investigative reports, Mr. Lanza was shy as a young pre-teen and then developed into a mentally unstable adult who was a virtual recluse and had an obsession with mass murder and war. Although Mr. Lanza was taken out of public school at 16 and homeschooled by his mother, there was nothing to suspect he would later commit such a horrible act. There was no indication of a motive and because Mr. Lanza took his own life we will never know w hy. There are some indications he had an obsession with mass murder and collected numerous paper clippings and stories of these crimes especially the Columbine High School shooting, however, there were no indications of abuse. This leads us to believe that a mental or personality disorder may have been at play. Unfortunately, crime is everywhere around us. In my own metropolitan area there was recently a horrible event. On January 26 Darion Aguilar arrived at Columbia Mall in Columbia, Md. He hung around the mall for a short while before assembling a shotgun in a back room then opening fire at a retail store killing two people then himself. Howard County Police department were called and investigated the incident. They found that Mr. Aguilar had no criminal record and legally purchased the gun he used about a month before the incident. Because this was an event that took place locally the Howard County Police Department had jurisdiction over this case. This was appropriate because it did not cross state lines or involve drugs or otherà illegal activity. While the S.W.A.T team was deployed no other agencies were actively involved. Recently our neighborhood was attacked by a group of juveniles from another local area. Some of my neighborââ¬â¢s property was destroyed, windows broken, and numerous items stolen. Our community sits off of a major highway, however, it is not very well lit and we do not have a security person or Neighborhood Watch group. If we were to adopt Sgt. Evansââ¬â¢ suggestions of adding more lights and video cameras, I think we would have a better chance of making sure this type of thing doesnââ¬â¢t happen. Also, I feel like if we were to add a Neighborhood Watch program and we all became actively involved in it, we would see that these kids would be deterred from coming around. I also think that it would be a good idea to enforce the curfew rule we have in place now. Children under the age of 18 are to be indoors by 9 p.m. during the week and 10 p.m. on the weekends. I feel like the parents of the kids who are causing problems need to be held responsible to some extent. If they made sure the kids were in at curfew then again we would not have such a problem.
